The fifth dimension

Friends that inspire us are precious. On the weekend we attended a birthday party for a friend who, five years ago, served me as a herald of the journey i was about to take.

His own journey into transformation, his dedication to it, his intentional crafting of the rituals and the language to share it - continue to inspire me.

I hope he doesn't mind me sharing this poem i wrote for his birthday.

You’ve achieved the fifth dimension

The four corners of the box you crafted
into hearth and home
work and worth
were squared away with decades four

But the music in the hills
the rhythm of water’s rush
the heart of wild ones beat in your chest
running in dreams of forests dark

and four corners could no longer hold
what spirit fired your soul to seek.
A larger hope was lifted
in the clutches of the eagle’s claws.

You saw beyond yesterday’s horizon
a place where death dances
passion’s fire from embers sleeping
into the light of dawn.

Returning to earth you found friends
who’d heard that strange song too
calling us on to find the path
to the ground where we all belong.
